A deciduous tree with open branching, a pyramidal crown in male specimens and more horizontal in female, reaching a height of over 30m.

The bark has a rather corky texture, grey in colour and cracked. Simple, light green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. They are fan-shaped, divided into two lobes. They are 5-10 cm long and are long-petiolate; the veins are parallel. They are alternate or arranged clusters of 3-5 leaves.

Dioecious flowers, on different nodes. The males are yellow, arranged in catkins. The females are solitary.

The fruit is a round or ellipsoid drupe, 2-3 cm in diameter, yellowish and with edible pulp. It contains 1-2 seeds.
