Deciduous tree reaching a height of 18 to 25 metres.

The leaves are opposite, compound palmate, with 5 nearly sessile leaflets, dark green in colour and often wrinkled.

The flowers are arranged in 12-to-20-centimetre clusters. They are hermaphrodites with 5 green sepals, 5 red petals and 7 stamens.

The fruit is a capsule with thick walls covered with spikes. It opens in autumn to release the seeds that are very similar to chestnuts.
