Adult specimens measure some 25 metres tall with a straight trunk with scars from the old branches. The crown is more or less conical, with hanging branches and the tips turned upward.

The leaves, measuring 3-4 x 1 cm, are pointy, hard, with parallel veins arranged spirally and overlapping each other.

A dioecious tree, with male flowers situated at the tips of the branches, reaching 6 to 10 centimetres in length. Feminine cones measuring 10 to 18 centimetres, golden green in colour, which mature in two years.

The seeds are winged and measure 4 centimetres.
